Hollie’s back – and wants a Christmas hit

TV talent shows have thrown up some gruesome moments down the years. However, it’ll be a while before we come across anything as grisly as Hollie Steel’s meltdown while singing ‘Edelweiss’ in the semi-final of Britain’s Got Talent back in May.

Anyway, 11-year-old Hollie has demonstrated her bouncebackability by recording an album of show tunes and operatic wailing arias – and the tutu-clad Lancastrian starlet also wants to release a Christmas single that would go head-to-head with the winner of this year’s X Factor.

With the support of her parents, Hollie has been spending evenings and weekends in the studio to record the album, which will be available for download before Christmas. They’ve paid for the sessions with Hollie’s proceeds from the Britain’s Got Talent tour.

Keen to dispel any suggestion that she’s a pushy showbiz mum, Hollie’s mother Nina said: “We’re doing this for her because it’s what she wants to do and she’s got all these songs she wants everybody to hear.”

“It’s a really special experience for an 11-year-old to go into a recording studio,” she continued, “but she just takes it in her stride and is still the same Hollie.” Phew. Nina’s also looking for a producer to sponsor the album and get it into the shops.

The precocious warbler shot to fame when she messed up the words to ‘Edelweiss’, from The Sound of Music, and began to cry on stage. After more blubbing and a great deal of fuss, Simon Cowell showed his caring side by allowing her to perform again. She remembered her lines second time round and strolled through to the final, which was eventually won by urban dance troupe Diversity.
